A1 for the spouse visa: what to expect from Start Deutsch 1 💍
Many partners take the A1 exam abroad before joining their spouse in Germany. German missions accept, among others, Goethe's and telc's Start Deutsch 1. Format (Goethe) · Written part 65 minutes, no break: listening, reading, a form and a short message. · Speaking 15 minutes, in a group of up to four, with no preparation time: introduce yourself, ask and answer questions, make and respond to requests. · Pass mark 60 out of 100. If you fail, you retake the whole exam. How long to prepare The Goethe-Institut in Cyprus mentions about 160 lessons of 45 minutes. You don't have to study at a Goethe course; self-study or another school is fine. Things learners find useful to know · You need to read and write the Latin alphabet. · The same Goethe page notes that certificates don't expire, but some German missions prefer one that is recent (within six months). Ask your embassy. · Spouses of skilled workers (Fachkräfte) and some other groups do not need to show A1 before entry. Check your case with the embassy before booking. The group speaking part feels strange to many: practise spelling your name and saying numbers out loud with others. Sources: https://www.goethe.de/ins/cy/en/spr/prf/ehe.html
