Nurses from abroad: why B2 matters and how long it takes 🩺
For recognition as a nurse (Pflegefachkraft) in Germany, the usual language requirement is B2. What official and employer pages say: · Bremen's recognition service: "normally language level B2". · A large hospital group: B2 in most federal states. Goethe and telc certificates are usually accepted; ÖSD is accepted in many states. · Specialised exams such as telc Deutsch B1·B2 Pflege also exist. It includes a writing task based on nursing reports and a pair speaking exam with 20 minutes of preparation. How long it takes The same employer page says: about 3 months per level if you study intensively, but often one to two years from B1 to B2 when learning part-time. What makes B2 hard · Much more reading and listening on unfamiliar topics · Writing longer, structured texts (Goethe B2: a forum post of about 150 words and a message of about 100) · Hospital German on top: reports, handovers, talking to patients and families Plan · Ask your recognition authority which certificates they accept before you book. · Learn general B2 and nursing vocabulary in parallel. · Recognition can also involve an adaptation course or a knowledge test, so language is only one part of the timeline.
