Official letters (Behördenpost): read them like this 📑
Letters from offices are real German practice with real consequences. A step-by-step routine many newcomers use: The same day · Open it. Photograph all pages. · Find four things: who sent it, the Aktenzeichen (your file number), the Betreff (subject), and any deadline. · Translate with a tool if you need to, but underline the key words yourself. Words worth knowing · Bescheid: an official decision · Frist: deadline. "bis zum 15.10." means that date; "innerhalb von 14 Tagen" counts from the letter date · Mahnung: payment reminder, act fast · Anhörung: you may give your side before a decision · Widerspruch: formal objection; the Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung at the end says how and by when · Nachzahlung / Erstattung: you pay more / you get money back Habits that help · Put a reminder in your calendar a few days before the deadline. · Always quote the Aktenzeichen when you reply. · Unsure? Ask a counselling service (for example Migrationsberatung) or the Verbraucherzentrale. Bonus: DTZ writing tasks are often exactly this kind of situation. Every letter you answer is exam practice.
