der, die, das: patterns that make it less random 🏷️
No learner likes this part. But there are patterns, and a few tricks learners swear by. Reliable patterns · Words ending in -ung, -heit, -keit are die: die Wohnung, die Freiheit, die Möglichkeit. · Many more feminine endings: -schaft, -ion, -tät (die Mannschaft, die Information, die Universität). · Diminutives in -chen are das: das Mädchen, das Brötchen. · Verbs used as nouns are das: das Essen, das Lernen. Tricks from learners · Pictures: link each gender to a person you know. Your dad drinks coffee (der Kaffee), your niece holds a flower (die Blume), a window in your home (das Fenster). · Colours: one highlighter colour per gender on your flashcards. · Voices: say masculine words in a deep voice, feminine in a high one, neuter like a robot. Silly, but people remember. · Always learn the noun with its article and plural, never alone. In the exam If you're unsure, a plural can save you (die for all genders), or rephrase with a word you know. Don't lose time on one article.
