DTZ exam day: how the day actually runs 🗓️
The DTZ (Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer) is the final language exam of the Integrationskurs. Learners who have taken it describe a long but predictable day. How it usually goes: · The written part comes first: Hören, Lesen and Schreiben, 100 minutes in total. Prep sites point out there is no break in between, so eat something beforehand. · Speaking (Sprechen) is often at a separate time slot, in pairs. One learner was given a time slot and paired with a stranger, not a classmate. · In one report the listening audio came from a player at the front of the room. Sitting close to it felt like an advantage, but the sound was clear everywhere. What learners say they would do again: · In Lesen: start with the tasks that feel easy, then come back to the hard ones. · Don't stop at unknown words. The overall meaning is usually enough to answer. · Practise many kinds of letters before the day. One learner found her writing topics unfamiliar and wrote less than she wanted. One learner sat the exam while ill and still passed, but her advice was simple: prepare well and try to be healthy on the day. Official check (g.a.s.t., the test developer): Hören about 25 minutes, Lesen 45 minutes, Schreiben 30 minutes; Sprechen about 16 minutes, usually in pairs.
