DTZ speaking in pairs: work with your partner, not against them 🤝
The DTZ speaking exam is normally a pair exam with three tasks, partly monologue and partly dialogue. There is no preparation time: you look at the task sheet and start. How teachers and prep sites describe the three tasks: · Introduce yourself and answer personal questions · Talk about a picture or a topic and your own experience · Plan something together with your partner What learners find hard: · The partner may be someone you have never met, and their level can be higher or lower than yours. · In the planning task, some people talk too much, others freeze. What helps: · The examiners score you, not the pair. A weak partner does not pull your score down if you stay active. · React to what your partner says: "Das finde ich gut", "Wie wäre es mit…?", "Ich habe eine andere Idee". · Make suggestions and give a reason for each one. · If you don't understand, ask: "Kannst du das bitte wiederholen?" Asking is allowed and buys you a few seconds. · Balance: don't talk for three minutes alone, but don't only say "ja, gut" either. Practise the planning task with a classmate using a timer: plan a party, a trip, a visit to someone in hospital. Swap roles and repeat.
