What does the Integrationskurs cost, and can you get money back? 💶
A question that comes up in every expat forum. The current numbers from BAMF: · The usual contribution is €2.29 per lesson hour (Unterrichtseinheit). For a 700-hour course that is about €1,603. · Some people pay nothing or can ask to be exempted, for example people who receive basic social benefits (Antrag auf Befreiung vom Kostenbeitrag). · Refund: if you pass the final exams within two years of your first eligibility (three years for special courses), you can apply for 50% of your contribution back. Watch out for old numbers. Blogs and forum posts from a few years ago mention much lower prices per hour. Always check the date of what you read. Learners' practical tips: · Keep all invoices and payment proofs from your Träger. You will need them for the refund. · Note the date on your first eligibility certificate. That is when the two-year clock starts. · If money is tight, ask about the exemption before you start, not after. · Travel costs: iamexpat mentions a travel allowance if the nearest provider is more than 5 km away. Ask your Träger. Sources: https://www.iamexpat.de/expat-info/citizenship-integration/german-integration-course · https://liveingermany.de/integration-course-in-germany/
