Integrationskurs: from permission slip to first lesson 🧭
What learners describe as the usual route: 1. Permission (Berechtigung or Zulassung) Many non-EU residents get the eligibility certificate with their residence permit. EU citizens and Germans can apply to BAMF, and are admitted if there is space. 2. Find a course provider (Träger) BAMF lists approved providers. They are often Volkshochschulen or language schools. Compare times: mornings, afternoons, evenings, part-time or full-time. One learner chose a 9-to-1 morning class, which left afternoons free to review. 3. Placement test (Einstufungstest) Before the course the Träger tests you, so you don't have to start at zero if you already know some German. 4. The course General course: 600 hours of language plus 100 hours of Orientierungskurs (law, history, culture, values). It ends with the DTZ and the Leben in Deutschland test. Tips from learners: · Choose carefully. Changing Träger later is only possible for special reasons (moving, childcare, a new job, switching between part-time and full-time). · Ask about the next start date and the waiting list, not only the price. · One learner only heard about the course from a neighbour. If you have a permit, ask your Ausländerbehörde whether you are entitled.
