Akkusativ or Dativ? The "give" test 🎁
Cases are the grammar topic learners mention most. One explanation many find helpful: Think of giving In "Ich gebe dir ein Buch": · ein Buch = the thing that moves = Akkusativ · dir = the person who receives = Dativ Many two-object verbs work like this: geben, schicken, zeigen, erklären, bringen. Person in Dativ, thing in Akkusativ. One object only With most everyday verbs (sehen, essen, lesen, kaufen, haben) the object is Akkusativ: Ich sehe den Bus. Exceptions to learn as vocabulary · Some verbs take Dativ though English doesn't show it: helfen, danken, gefallen, vertrauen. (Ich helfe dir.) · fragen takes Akkusativ for the person: Ich frage den Lehrer. Prepositions Learn them in groups: · always Dativ: aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu · always Akkusativ: durch, für, gegen, ohne, um · two-way (in, an, auf…): Wohin? → Akk. Wo? → Dat. Practice: write five sentences a day with geben/schicken/zeigen and check the endings. Then say them aloud. Sources: https://yourdailygerman.com/german-cases-accusative-dative/
