They answer in English? How learners stay in German 🔄
Almost every learner in Germany knows this moment: you ask in German, the answer comes in English. Why it happens (according to learners and teachers) · Many Germans speak good English and want to be helpful. · In a hurry, English feels faster to them. · Some just enjoy practising their English. It is rarely meant as an insult. What learners say works · Just keep answering in German. Often the other person switches back after a few sentences. · Say it directly and kindly: "Ich möchte mein Deutsch verbessern. Können wir Deutsch sprechen?" · Pick your moments: a busy checkout is a bad place to practise; a café, a neighbour, a club is a good one. · Older people are often happy to speak German. · A language exchange (Tandem) gives you a partner who wants to speak German with you. · Work on sounding confident: common fillers like "also", "na ja", "genau" make your German flow more naturally. And be honest with yourself: if you start in English, it often stays in English. Start in German, even with a simple sentence.
