There is no perfect rule, but these help a lot: 1. All plurals take de — de huizen, de boeken 2. All diminutives (-je) take het — het huisje, het meisje 3. Word endings: · de: -heid, -ing, -tie, -teit (de vrijheid, de woning, de informatie, de universiteit) · het: -isme, most words in -ment (het toerisme, het document) · a verb used as a noun takes het — het eten, het leven For all other words: learn the article together with the word. In the vocabulary cards the article is always shown.
