Children's books and kids' TV: the underrated A2 bridge 🧸
Many adult learners feel a bit silly at first, but children's content comes up in many success stories. What learners used: · Children's books: simple picture books and well-known classics in Dutch translation. · Children's TV and news for young people, such as the NOS Jeugdjournaal and Het Klokhuis. · Children's shows with Dutch subtitles for absolute beginners. Why it works: · Short sentences, clear pronunciation and pictures that support the meaning. · Topics from daily life: school, family, animals, the weather. · You finish a whole book, which is motivating. How to use it: · Read out loud, so you also practise pronunciation. · Collect five new words per book and add them to your flashcards. · Watch the same short episode twice: once for the story, once with the subtitles to catch words. When it gets too easy, move to news in easy Dutch and books marked "makkelijk lezen". Some learners also mentioned reading as much as possible helped them most with the reading exam.
