Since 1 January 2026 non-EU nationals applying for a first multi-year card or resident card must pass the civic exam (40 questions in French, 32 correct needed, 45 minutes at most). Exempt: applicants over 65, card categories outside the integration contract, beneficiaries of subsidiary protection and stateless persons (and their families). Adjustments or exemption are possible for health reasons with a medical certificate. You register at an approved centre via the CCI Paris Île-de-France or France Éducation international search tools. Fraud leads to a two-year ban. This is an external link; the publisher's terms of use apply.
