Should I take A1 or go straight to A2? 🤔
A common question from newcomers: is the DELE A1 worth it, or should I aim for A2 directly? Things to consider: · If your goal is Spanish nationality by residence, the Instituto Cervantes names the DELE A2 or higher as the language diploma for that file. An A1 does not meet that requirement. · If you want a first certificate for motivation, your CV or a course, A1 is a realistic milestone, and DELE diplomas have indefinite validity. · Exam dates are limited. In 2026 the general A1 is offered in May and November, while A2 has more dates in Spain. Look at the calendar before you decide. A practical rule many learners follow: if you can already understand short announcements, write a simple message and hold a basic conversation, go for A2. If you still translate every word in your head, an A1 first can build confidence. Whatever you choose, register before the closing date (fecha de cierre de inscripción) of the convocatoria; it is often several weeks before the exam.
