Empadronamiento: register at your town hall and keep it current 🏠
Everyone who lives in Spain must register in the padrón (municipal register) of the town where they usually live. This registration is called empadronamiento and is done at the ayuntamiento (town hall). Why it matters for your plans: · A certificado de empadronamiento is one of the documents for the nationality by residence file. · Many local services and procedures ask for it. Good to know: · Non-EU citizens without a permanent residence authorisation must renew their registration every two years. · The padrón only records where you live. It does not prove or give legal residence; that depends on your residence permit. · Bring a valid identity document: your residence card, or a valid passport; non-EU citizens often need their NIE document too. Each town hall publishes its own requirements. Tip: put a reminder in your calendar 23 months after each registration.
