Nationality by residence: which tests do I need? 🧩
For Spanish nationality by residence (nacionalidad por residencia), the Instituto Cervantes runs the two tests the law asks for in most cases: · the DELE A2 or higher (language), and · the CCSE (constitutional and sociocultural knowledge). Exemptions exist. For example: · Nationals of countries or territories where Spanish is spoken do not need the DELE, as long as it is their nationality of origin and not an acquired one. They still take the CCSE. · People who completed the ESO (compulsory secondary education) in Spain are exempt from the CCSE. · In other specific situations an exemption (dispensa) can be requested from the Ministry of Justice; check the official pages for your case. Residence periods also differ: 10 years in general, 5 years for recognised refugees, 2 years for nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal and people of Sephardic origin, and 1 year in some special cases. Start with the tests: they take months to plan because of dates and results.
