If a child is in danger, e.g. because it is beaten or has to go hungry, the Jugendamt (youth welfare office) may temporarily take it out of the family (Inobhutnahme, protective custody). Kindergeld (child benefit), however, is paid by the Familienkasse, and parents choose the school.
