Examen civique: what the 45 minutes look like đź§
Since 1 January 2026 the examen civique (civic exam) is part of the path to a first multi-year card, a resident card and naturalisation. Many people are nervous because it is new, but the format itself is simple and fully described by the Ministry of the Interior. The official format: · 40 multiple-choice questions in French, 4 answer options, one correct answer · 28 knowledge questions + 12 mises en situation (short everyday scenarios) · 45 minutes maximum, on a tablet or computer · Pass mark: 32 correct answers (80%) Five themes: principles and values of the Republic · institutions and political system · rights and duties · history, geography and culture · living in French society. What this means in practice: · About one minute per question. There is time to read carefully, but not to hesitate on every item. · 80% is high. You can only miss 8 questions, so weak themes matter. · The scenarios test judgement (what should you do, what is allowed), not memorised dates. Tip: time yourself on 40 practice questions in 45 minutes at least twice before booking.
