Formation civique vs examen civique: not the same thing ❓
A frequent question: 'I did the civic training with the OFII, do I still need the exam?' They are two different steps: · The formation civique is part of the contrat d'intégration républicaine (CIR). Service-public describes it as 24 hours in four sessions, free, with an interpreter present for people who need one. · The examen civique is a separate test: 40 questions, 32 correct needed, in an approved centre. Since 1 January 2026 it is required for a first carte de séjour pluriannuelle, a carte de résident and for naturalisation. The training helps a lot: the free fiches on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr are organised by training day and by exam theme. But the site itself says that reading the content does not replace attending the training. Who is exempt from the exam: according to the Ministry, beneficiaries of international protection and nationals of certain countries covered by bilateral agreements; a medical certificate can support an exemption or accommodations. Renewing a card you already hold does not require the attestation. If unsure about your case, check with your préfecture before booking.
