DELF A1: a first diploma to prove you've started 🌱
The DELF A1 is not required for any French residence card, but many beginners still take it. It gives a clear goal for the first months and a real diploma that has no expiry. What an A1 learner is expected to do: introduce themselves, understand simple announcements and signs, fill in a simple form, write a short message, and handle basic exchanges like buying something or asking the time. How learners prepare: · Learn the core everyday vocabulary first: numbers, days, months, family, food, transport, shops, house. · Practise filling in forms (name, address, date of birth, nationality) until it is automatic. · Record a short self-presentation and listen back. · Do one full sample test from the official DELF materials before the exam to know the timing. Why it helps later: moving from A1 to A2 is a small step, and A2 is the level asked for a first carte de séjour pluriannuelle. Taking A1 first shows you how the DELF format works before the step that really counts.
