Time your TCF so it is still valid when you apply ⏳
TCF and TEF attestations used for a residence card or naturalisation are valid for 2 years. For naturalisation, service-public says the attestation must have been issued less than 2 years before. A simple back-planning many people follow: 1. Find out the level you need (A2 multi-year card, B1 resident card, B2 naturalisation). 2. Register for the test 2 to 3 months before you want to submit your file. Popular centres can be full weeks ahead. 3. Count a few weeks for results. One university centre states about 15 working days. 4. Book the examen civique in parallel: it has no expiry, so it can be done first. 5. Submit your file while the language attestation is still clearly valid. If your score is just below the level you need, look at which skill pulled you down. For the multiple-choice parts, targeted practice for a few weeks often helps; for writing and speaking, a short course with correction usually helps more than extra mock tests. For naturalisation, remember the processing time is long (up to 18 months by law), so the test only has to be valid at submission.
