TCF/TEF or DELF? How to choose for your card or passport ⚖️
For the French level of a residence card or naturalisation, the préfecture accepts several proofs: a TCF or TEF attestation, a DELF diploma at the right level, or certain French diplomas (for example the brevet, a CAP, or RNCP level 3 and up). The key differences people weigh: · Validity: TCF and TEF attestations are valid 2 years. A DELF diploma has no time limit. · Result type: TCF/TEF give a level for each skill. The DELF is a pass/fail diploma at one level: you pass B1 or you don't. · Sessions: TCF and TEF are offered often. DELF sessions are fewer and fixed per centre. · Pressure: with DELF you choose one target level. With TCF/TEF, a slightly weaker day can still give a level, just maybe a lower one. Rules of thumb from learners: · Applying soon, one card only: TCF IRN or TEF IRN. · Planning several steps (A2 card now, B1 resident card later, B2 nationality one day): a DELF at the higher level avoids retesting every two years. Always check the level you need on your préfecture's page before registering.
