TEF listening: train with real-life French, not textbook French 🎧
Since the 2025 update, the TEF IRN listening section uses everyday audio: answering-machine messages, announcements, short street interviews. Twenty questions in 20 minutes. What helps, according to learners and teachers: · Listen to real announcements: station and metro messages, radio news, shop and doctor voicemails. They are fast and full of numbers and times. · Practise numbers until they are automatic: soixante-dix, quatre-vingt-dix, dates, times, prices, phone numbers. · Read the question and answers before the audio starts, if you have time. Knowing what to look for is half the work. · Don't try to understand every word. Catch the key information: who, where, when, what to do. · After a wrong answer in practice, listen again with the transcript to find the exact word you missed. Free daily sources many learners use: public radio news in simple French and news in slow French from public broadcasters. Ten minutes of active listening every day beats one long session per week.
