TEF IRN or TCF IRN? Both work, choose by date and place 📍
Both the TEF IRN and the TCF IRN are accepted as proof of French level for residence cards and naturalisation, and both attestations are valid for 2 years. Préfectures do not prefer one over the other. What people actually decide on: · Session dates: pick the test with the nearest centre and the first useful date. · Timing: TEF IRN takes 90 minutes, TCF IRN about 1 h 35 at the centre described below. · Speaking: TEF has two 5-minute speaking parts, TCF has three tasks in about 10 minutes. Some learners prefer one style after trying sample tasks. · Price: set by each centre. Compare two or three centres; the Hérault préfecture mentions a range of roughly 100 to 200 euros for these tests. One thing not to do: take both in the same week 'to be sure'. Prepare well for one, then retake only if needed. And if you plan several steps over many years, also consider a DELF, which has no expiry.
