Official news item (18 December 2025): the examen civique applies from 1 January 2026 for the multi-year card, the resident card and naturalisation, and must be passed before you apply.

Service-Public summarises the exam: digital, 45 minutes maximum, 40 multiple-choice questions (28 knowledge, 12 practical situations), at least 32 correct answers (80%). Renewals of existing cards and beneficiaries of international protection are exempt. The exam must be taken before you submit the residence or naturalisation application; preparation material is on formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr. Free, in French (an English version exists).
