Not sure if it's de or het? Exam-day fallbacks 🏷️
Learning the article with every word is the best long-term habit. But in the exam, you will meet words you're not sure about. Learner write-ups mention a few safe fallbacks. Fallbacks that are always true: · All plurals take "de": de huizen, de kinderen. · All diminutives take "het": het huisje, het kopje. A good guess: · Most Dutch nouns are "de" words, so if you really don't know and have no dictionary, "de" is the better guess. · Words ending in -ing, -heid, -tie are almost always "de": de woning, de gezondheid, de informatie. Smart avoidance: · Use a plural if it fits the meaning. · Use "mijn", "uw", "een" where natural; they don't show de/het (but watch the adjective ending: een groot huis vs. het grote huis). In the Staatsexamen writing exam you may use the Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek NT2, which shows de/het, so check there in your final round.
