Small switches that bring Dutch into your day 🏠
You don't need to move to a village without English speakers. Learners describe small changes that together add a lot of Dutch to an ordinary day. Screens: · Watch series and films you already like with Dutch audio or Dutch subtitles. One learner who reached a conversational level in a year called this the most effective part of their routine. · Follow a few Dutch accounts or news pages, so Dutch appears between everything else. Around you: · Read the local newspaper, even if you only understand the headlines at first. · Listen to people around you on the train or in a café. Try to catch one phrase and repeat it quietly. Your own habits: · Write down new words when you hear them, and repeat useful phrases out loud. · Try one short conversation per day in Dutch: the bakery, a neighbour, a colleague. · Don't switch to English yourself. Learners often say that if you start in English, the conversation stays in English. None of these replace study. But they make sure the Dutch you learn gets used, and that is what makes it stick.
