Who is Nederlands in gang for?
Nederlands in gang (Boom, revised edition of June 2026, by Berna de Boer, Margaret van der Kamp and Simone Pentermann) is a communicative beginner course for highly educated learners. In 16 chapters it takes you from no Dutch to the A2 level, the level of the inburgeringsexamen A2. The publisher recommends using it in a class or with study partners rather than completely on your own.
What the book covers
- 16 chapters on everyday situations: introducing yourself, shopping, work, housing, health and appointments.
- Speaking, listening, reading and writing in every chapter, with grammar explained along the way.
- Online practice material from the publisher.
- A fast pace that suits learners who are used to studying.
How to use it for the inburgeringsexamen A2
The book teaches the language; the exam asks you to show it in DUO's format (Lezen, Luisteren, Schrijven on paper, Spreken, plus KNM). A good rhythm is one chapter a week, and from about chapter 8 on also short practice in the exam format: reading and listening questions with the answer explained, one short letter or form by hand per week, and the KNM themes.
Free practice: EUpassway has free inburgeringsexamen A2 and KNM practice with answers and explanations, a step-by-step guide to registering for the exam, and A1–A2 Dutch word lists with audio. No account needed.
Is there a free PDF?
Nederlands in gang is published by Boom and protected by copyright; EUpassway does not share PDF copies, and downloads offered elsewhere are usually illegal copies. You buy the book from the publisher or a bookshop. For free official material, use DUO's practice exams on inburgeren.nl, which are linked in our A2 guide.
