Failed the DELF, TCF, TEF or the examen civique? How retakes work (2026)
What to do after a fail or a too-low level: retakes per exam.
A1 · DELF A1 tout public
Take the whole exam again at a later session (no partial pass). Keep your permanent candidate number.
A2 · DELF A2 tout public
Take the whole exam again at a later session (no partial pass). Keep your permanent candidate number.
B1 · DELF B1 tout public
Take the whole exam again at a later session (no partial pass). Keep your permanent candidate number.
B2 · DELF B2 tout public
Take the whole exam again at a later session (no partial pass). Keep your permanent candidate number.
TCF · Test de connaissance du français (TCF IRN)
You can retake; example AF Strasbourg: at least 20 days between two attempts. Pay the fee again.
TEF · Test d’évaluation de français (TEF IRN)
You may not take the same TEF test (any version) twice within 20 days.
Civique · Examen civique (civic exam)
Retake as many times as needed before you apply; pass mark 32 of 40.
Naturalisation · French nationality by decree
No separate exam: you submit a B2 proof and your civic-exam pass; both tests can be retaken before you apply.
